Bridging the Gap between Cognitive Work Analysis and Ecological Interface Design
نویسنده
چکیده
The Cognitive Work Analysis and Ecological Interface Design frameworks have garnered a great deal of attention in recent years. The former is used to analyze a complex work domain to identify the behaviorshaping constraints imposed by the work domain, control tasks, strategies, operator competencies, and socio-organizational factors. The latter informs the design of operator interfaces for complex systems. Although the two frameworks overlap, a gap remains between the analysis and design stages. This article shows one path across that gap. Aspects of both frameworks were applied to the design of an ecological interface for a petrochemical process. We discuss how the project was completed under realistic time and budget constraints, review several unanticipated obstacles that we encountered, and relate design examples to help overcome the gap between analysis and design.

Bridging Small-Gap Peripheral Nerve Defect Using Silicone Rubber Chamber in the Rat Sciatic Nerve Transection Model
Despite promising results observed using silicone rubber chamber, no previous comprehensive work was performed on behavior of the conduit. Present study aimed at further functional, histomorphometrical and immunohistochemical assessment of nerve regeneration in the same animal along a 10-mm rat sciatic nerve gap. Fifty- four male Wistar rats were divided into three experimental groups (n = 1...

Identifying information requirements is a well-understood activity, but the practice of converting data into visual form based on these requirements is less defined. The Ecological Interface Design (EID) framework attempts to bridge this design gap by offering a set of visual design principles. While these principles supply high-level goals to be achieved by the display, they do not describe th...
متن کاملExtending Ecological Interface Design to Auditory Displays
We have proposed an extension of Ecological Interface Design (EID) to encompass the design of auditory displays. Our analysis shows that EID can succeed in this task if all stages of Cognitive Work Analysis (CWA) are employed and if an extra “attentional mapping” stage is added, which maps the attentional need of the human operators. A review of auditory perception and attention suggests that t...

This commentary addresses Bowen et al’s empirical study of perspectives of Canadian healthcare staff towards research and their call for multi-faceted action to improve misalignments in the system. This commentary argues that tensions and misalignments between research and service are inherent and can never be eradicated. Building on previous work by Lanham et al, I pro...
متن کاملWork Domain Analysis for Ecological Interface Design to Prevent Ship Collision
Anti-collision at sea is technically difficult to realize as it involves the complex interaction between human navigators, ships and surrounding topographical environment. Collision avoidance should be conducted by human navigators. This paper proposes a way to graphically present relevant information for collision avoidance to help the human navigators’ decision making. The display can provide...
